The start of something new....

Well, yesterday was probably the happiest shift I've had in a while at my current place of employment...not because of what anyone did (or didn't do) but because before even walked in the door, I got a call from another restaurant offering me a job -- and we all know how fun it is to be at a place knowing that at any time, you could just walk and not give a thought about it because in just a few short hours or days you will be starting something better.

Granted this restaurant is corporate, but I must go where the money is, and where I'm wanted.  So, today will be my last Shift Leader shift at my current establishment (I still have one more serving shift there), and the first of hopefully many shifts at the new place.  As is par for blogs like this, I cannot disclose where I will be working, but it is an upscale seafood and steak type place -- not quite fine dining, but as close as a corporate chain can get.

Yes, I am still looking for that fine dining spot, and yes, I'm desperately looking for something during the day in the IT or political arena, but for now, this will do just nicely.  I will say that I will miss the majority of the people I work with at my current/former job, as many of them have become very close friends, if not borderline family.  I know I will meet new friends at this new venture, but as we all know, change is hard.  Of course, most of the people who I count as friends were all leaving as well -- some moving to Florida, some are off to school, and others are leaving for the same or similar reasons that I am.

It's especially hard when, for the last 3 years, I was on top...head server, choice picks in schedule, section, etc.  Now, I am at the bottom.  I suspect this will suck for quite some time, but we shall see.  Hopefully, a day or two after I start someone else will start so I wont be on the absolute bottom, but time will tell.

To the new staff and manager at my former place:  I wish you all the best of luck there, it will be hard, and there will be lots of bullshit daily (it's everywhere), but I think that if you stick to your guns, do what NEEDS to be done, and not let the other managers walk all over you, you will all do well.

In the end, I'm glad I'm moving on.  It couldn't have happened at a better time.  To those of you who I have worked with for the last 4 years, I enjoyed most every minute of it with you.  Some of you have become family and I hope after I move on, we will all still keep in contact.

  1. ha! right after some random guy on the internet randomly had you mentioning corporate restaurants. congratulations! btw, i am uniquely positioned to tell you: if your friends are planning to stay in the biz, you should advise them to think very carefully before moving to florida.
